Academic Program
Our goal is to
provide support, services, and instructional means which enable all students to have the
best learning opportunities possible.

ACCELERATED READER
(AR)
AR is provided for all students in all grade levels. AR is
based on the premise that reading improvement is positively correlated with the amount of
time students spend reading. Students voluntarily read as many books as they want. After
reading a book, the student uses a computer to take a test of comprehension and
understanding. The student's score on the test is used to award points which are based on
the students age, grade and the reading difficulty level of the book. These points become
incentives to read, and students use the points to buy items in the campus AR store and to
cash in for special privileges.
READING LABS
Through the use of Federal Title funds, the District
provides special computer-based reading labs on all campuses in grades K - 12 which are
used primarily to assist students attain and maintain grade level reading abilities.
PHONICS PROGRAMS

Special phonics programs are used in elementary grade
levels to reinforce the regular curriculum. Saxon Phonics, formerly known as Classroom
Phonics, is used in the lower elementary grade levels to provide students with additional
phonetic word attack skills.
MATH PROGRAMS
The District's regular textbook math program is reinforced
and supplemented by the use of Saxon Math and EXCEL Math programs in the elementary grade
levels. Secondary math students benefit from honors, advanced honors, dual credit and
advanced placement courses.
INTERNET ACCESS

All administrative offices, campuses and classrooms are
fully networked via the District's fiber optic network system. Teachers and students in
all classrooms have access to the district-wide WAN, the campus LAN, libraries throughout
the state, and to the Internet. This networked computer system provides teachers and
students with many additional instructional and learning opportunities not available in
traditional classrooms which do not have this computer network system.

TEXAS LIBRARY
CONNECTION
All libraries in the District are fully automated, have
access to the Internet, and are connected to other libraries statewide which are members
of the Texas Library Connection. Staffed by competent, progressive librarians, the
District's learning resource centers are an integral part of the instruction and learning
environment.
DUAL
CREDIT, ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES
At the high school level the curriculum includes dual
credit courses whereby students can simultaneously obtain college credit while completing
their requirements for the high school diploma. Also available are Advanced Placement
classes which give students the opportunity to obtain college credit by passing a college
level exam upon completion of the requirements for that particular course.
ALTERNATIVE
EDUCATION PROGRAMS
The District operates two alternative education programs.
One, an in-school suspension named "Q-1", is for short-term disciplinary
assignments of 10 days or less. Students who are given long-term assignments in an
alternative setting are placed in the District's Alternative Education Program.
GIFTED AND
TALENTED PROGRAM
The Gifted and Talented Program for
elementary schools will be presented in two formats. Kindergarten, first, and second grade
students will be selected to participate in a Talent Pool Program. Third,
fourth, and fifth grade students will be selected for the Gifted and Talented
Program.
While all selected students (K-5) are
identified as Gifted/Talented students, the standards for the younger kindergarten, first,
and second grade students will be less restrictive, with a target number of approximately
15% of the total enrollment for these grades to be eligible for participation. At the end
of the second grade school year, all of the students in the Talent Pool Program will be
screened for placement in the third grade Gifted and Talented Program. Standards designed
to identify approximately 5% of the total enrollment for this grade level will be used to
access each of these students. Students who are participating in the Talent Pool but fail
to meet the higher standards for continuing in the program will be dismissed from the
program and will no longer be identified as Gifted and Talented students.
All kindergarten students are considered for
placement in the Talent Pool. Following the kindergarten year, a student must be nominated
for placement by a parent or a teacher. If you feel your child might meet the
qualifications for placement in the Gifted and Talented Program, please contact your
campus principal for additional information.
